The National Human Papilloma (HPV) Vaccination Program will commence from April 2007. This program will provide free HPV vaccine to females aged 12 to 26 years in a phased program.
The Australian Government has announced that General Practitioners will be able to access the Gardasil (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine from July 2007.
General Practitioners and community-based immunisation providers will be able to vaccinate as follows:
Females aged 18 to 26 years of age (inclusive) - until the end of June 2009 (the full course of three doses must be completed before the end of June 2009 and before the woman reaches age 27 years. The vaccine has not been approved for use by the Therapeutic Goods administration (TGA) in women older than 26 years.
The Gardasil vaccine (supplied by CSL Biotherapies) is a three dose course of vaccine administered at 0, 2 months and 6 months.
The National program will also target females 12 to 18 years of age in a secondary school based immunisation program commencing from April 2007 and administered by local councils as follows:
Year 1 (2007) Year 7, Year 10, Year 11, Year 12
Year 2 (2008) Year 7, Year 9, Year 10
2009 and ongoing Year 7
